The Classic on Combat between B-17's and the Luftwaffe

When I first read Mr.Caidin's book when I was 11 or 12 years old, the images of air combat over Europe stayed with me my entire life. I never knew how much I missed this book until I watched the movie "Twelve O'Clock High" with Gregory Peck recently. The search was on and much as I may have been an impressionable youth, upon reading this past week, I find the book to be one of the best on the stategy, tactics and final outcome of that disastrous October air raid. From generals to privates, Mr.Caidin paints the complete picture including actual combat reports. After the re-reading, my respect for the men who manned the "heavies" increased more than ever. If any one volume could be recommended by me to describe the first two years of the 8th Air Force's efforts in Europe, this is, by far, the best I've read.
The seller was superb and the book was only slighty used and packaged extremely well; highly recommend them!

The infamous Schweinfurt raid told by the master, Martin Caidin. The bravery of the 8th Airforce's bomber crews, bombing the bearings factories inside Germany and without fighter escort is unmatched. This book published in 1960, takes you inside the dramatic raid from the beginning planning stage to the actual mission which resulted in the loss of 60 B-17 bombers and their crews in a daring raid to slow down the Nazi war machine. It pays a great homage to the brave young men who fought many bloody battles in the sky to prepare for the future invasion of "Fortress Europe" in the air five miles high against a well trained enemy, in brutal sub zero temperatures, with the threat of flak and German fighter pilots delivering death to and from the target. An excellent read!
