Set in a rich, high-fantasy world inspired by ancient Rome, Sabaa Tahir's AN EMBER IN THE ASHES told the story of Laia, a slave fighting for her family, and Elias, a young soldier fighting for his freedom.
Now, in A TORCH AGAINST THE NIGHT, Elias and Laia are running for their lives.
After the events of the Fourth Trial, Martial soldiers hunt the two fugitives as they flee the city of Serra and undertake a perilous journey through the heart of the Empire.
Laia is determined to break into Kauf—the Empire’s most secure and dangerous prison—to save her brother, who is the key to the Scholars' survival. And Elias is determined to help Laia succeed, even if it means giving up his last chance at freedom.
But dark forces, human and otherworldly, work against Laia and Elias. The pair must fight every step of the way to outsmart their enemies: the bloodthirsty Emperor Marcus, the merciless Commandant, the sadistic Warden of Kauf, and, most heartbreaking of all, Helene—Elias’s former friend and the Empire’s newest Blood Shrike.
Bound to Marcus's will, Helene faces a torturous mission of her own—one that might destroy her: find the traitor Elias Veturius and the Scholar slave who helped him escape...and kill them both.

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of September 2016: With sequels there’s always an underlying worry that the second book won’t live up to its predecessor, but Sabaa Tahir’s A Torch Against the Night not only meets expectations—it surpasses them. Tahir returns to Elias and Laia’s quest to rescue Laia’s brother from an impenetrable prison while eluding the Emperor and Commandant. Helen, now the Blood Shrike, is under the Emperor’s orders to kill them, and it’s clear that she still knows her former best friend as well as ever. The stakes are higher in this novel and the suspense just keeps building from new directions. The characters’ internal conflict is almost painful to read, but that’s part of what makes the story so intense. How can you kill someone you love? And how do you watch someone you love die trying to save you? Packed with cliff hangers, A Torch Against the Night ends with the same feeling as the first: a burning desire to read the next book. Right. This. Minute. --Seira Wilson, The Amazon Book Review
From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up—In this sequel to An Ember in the Ashes, Martial Elias and Scholar Laia are trying to escape from Serra and reach the prison of Kauf, where Laia's brother has been imprisoned for having secret knowledge of Martial weapons. Their journey will be extremely hazardous, since Helene Aquilla, childhood friend and fellow Mask, who is now Blood Shrike for the Emperor, has been ordered to hunt Elias down. Elias and Laia are also trying to evade Elias's ruthless mother, the Commandant, who is scheming to seize power and is willing even to poison her own son to achieve her ends. Most dangerous of all, however, is the grim prison of Kauf, where their attempt to rescue Laia's brother leads to further horrors and some surprises. Told in the alternating voices of Elias, Laia, and Helene, this book is even darker and grimmer than the first, which readers will need to be familiar with in order to follow the twists and turns of the plot. Strong and compelling characters, particularly Helene, who is fleshed out more than in the previous volume, and a number of action-packed sequences help keep things moving. VERDICT This one is bound to be popular with fans of the first installment, making this a must-purchase.—Kathleen E. Gruver, Burlington County Library, Westampton, NJ

The fascinating story continues
By Jennifer Shelton
Sabaa hooked me in from the very beginning and still hasn't let me go. The 2nd book doesn't disappoint, unless you count the long wait for the next book. There was no annoying reiteration of events from the first book. The action picks up right where Ember ended...or maybe paused is a better word. The characters are so well-fleshed that you can't help but feel with them, fight with them, and be taken over by other emotions as you experience it with them. We even get glimpses of understanding of the "evil" ones. Throughout both books you notice a theme of choices, each one with its own set of consequences, but inexorably dragging us toward a dramatic conclusion.
Sabaa has created a wonderful world full of complex characters and broiling situations. I really enjoy her writing style, even if open endings are frustrating for a hungry bookworm! I will recommend (and have already) to anyone and everyone. This is a series I will be reading over and over, and one day passing on to my kids.

An extraordinary sequel
By Lori
When I start a sequel to a book I absolutely loved I always have a tiny bit of dread. There’s so many what ifs. What if it doesn’t live up to the first book? What if things take a weird turn? What if it just flat out sucks? I’ve had those things happen before. I loved An Ember in the Ashes so much. It caused quite a bit of sequel anxiety in me. I shouldn’t have worried. A Torch Against the Night was just as incredible as the first book.
This book picks up right after Ember’s ending. The action is present from page one. So is the intensity. I was swept right back into the story without a moment’s hesitation.
One of the biggest differences with A Torch Against the Night was the addition of Helene’s POV. I didn’t care much for her in An Ember in the Ashes. I disliked her even more in this book, but somehow that didn’t detract from the story for me. I still found her chapters to be fascinating. Helene is supposed to be this intelligent, strong, and capable woman. She was bestowed a very high position because of those things. She seemed to do a lot of dumb things for someone so smart, in my opinion. I have a feeling her character is about to have some major growth though. I’m interested in seeing where her story line goes.
Elias and Laia were just as wonderful and captivating as before. Both characters continued to grow and evolve in this book. I loved watching Laia discover new things about herself and become braver and more confident. I still want to give Elias a hug (and maybe a kiss). He was still so broken throughout most of this book, but I cannot wait to see what happens with him in the next book.
There’s a bit more romance in this one, but I don’t want to comment on it too much for fear of spoilers. Just know that I love Elias.
I think the most memorable thing about A Torch Against the Night is the twists and turns! There were a couple of things I didn’t see coming at all. One broke my heart and I did have an inkling of another thing, but it still surprised me when it was revealed.
Another thing I loved about A Torch Against the Night was that there’s more magic! I was really intrigued by the magic in Ember, so I was thrilled to see that developed more.
Overall, A Torch Against the Night was an extraordinary sequel. I loved it just as much as the first book. Sabaa Tahir has a life long fan in me now. Book 3 can’t get here fast enough!

Eilas’ former best friend, Helene and diverse supernatural elements serve as ...
By Sameena K. Mughal
“A Torch Against the Night,” Sabaa Tahir’s second novel, continues her chronicle of the brutal Empire. This time, we follow Elias and Laia on their quest to free Laia’s brother, Darin from the Empire’s deadliest prison, Kauf. During this journey, the Commandant, Eilas’ former best friend, Helene and diverse supernatural elements serve as obstacles in this fast-paced tale.
In this newest offering, Tahir shows us the evolution of Laia and Helene coming into their own as young girls who become powerful women. At various times, they both control and are controlled by their circumstances. Laia discovers unexpected strength as she escapes one life-threatening situation after another. Along the way, more and more of her supernatural power reveals itself, leading even the mysterious jinn, Nightbringer to ask, “What in the skies are you?” That is the question Laia continuously asks herself, all while soldiering on towards her goal. Similarly, Helene who becomes a narrator along with Elias and Laia shows her constant struggle and vulnerability while doing what she has to do. As Blood Shrike, she is the second most powerful person in the Empire, but as a woman, she is just as much a victim of the Empire as anyone. In the midst of the struggle, she manages to hold her own in her male-dominated sphere.
Elias has his own journey and feels compelled to break away from Laia in order to complete their task. A new element to his conflict comes into play, leading him to be captured by the Warden of Kauf, a sadistic torturer who unleashes on Elias with passion.
The common link between the villains in the novel is their passion for what they do. The Commandant and Warden enjoy inflicting pain on anyone they deem beneath them, mainly Scholars, the oppressed group in the story. While the warden tortures them, the Commandant is mass murdering them. This characterization renders them one-dimensional. However, the Nightbringer has passion with a purpose: to protect and save his people, making him a complex and intriguing character.
Again, as she did in “An Ember in the Ashes,” Tahir creates a compelling tale that draws the reader in until the end. You are invested in Laia, Elias, and Helene, and those who come into their circle. She also weaves unexpected twists that surprise you and yet fit into the narrative in a seamless way. “A Torch Against the Night” is a worthy sequel that will have fans wanting more and anxiously awaiting Books 3 and 4. It is a must-read.
