Awesome book, detailed how-to on creating better images for online products!

If you've ever tried to buy something online, and wasn't sure if it was a ripoff because of a grimy or blurry picture, take that as a lesson. It shows how much a product image can affect our point of view on whether we like something or not.

This book seeks to address that issue! I was surprised to see so much detail here. I have sold some products on craigslist and ebay, but never really put much emphasis on the product image. In the book George mentions that "The first contact customers have with your product is through your pictures", something that's so obvious that it's looked over. Any serious entrepreneur selling on eBay will probably tell you that the picture matters a LOT.

I'd recommend this book to anyone looking for a detailed breakdown on how to photograph the products they sell. It'll give you a huge advantage especially among the mass of similar products online. Even people who just have a lot of stuff lying around in their house that they can sell will benefit from this.

So much useful advice jammed into one little book!

Fantastic. Well written, great illustrations. Just flawless, chock full of useful photographic advice for selling product on EBay or Etsy. I've taken amateur photography courses, and got more useful advice out of this book -- much more -- than I did from a semester of futzing about in a college class.

The Peacocks Tales is a wounderfull start to connect the dots.

This book is amazing. It gives a lot of answers to the question, is it all connected. The book is filled with evidence that there is a divine hand at work in our universe and that it is everywhere you look. I have read all of Marty`s books so far and he really has a gift from the Creator. If anyone wishes to bring more of the dots together I highly recommend any and all of Marty`s books and also check out his face book page, you will find them very mind opening.

Pilots thought it was a sweet plane to fly, but noticed that the wheel struts sometimes broke, the engine leaked oil, and the guns sometimes didn’t fire. And when they flew it against the nimble fighters of Japan, too often they didn’t come back.

Yet all the while, the Finns tore great holes through the Russian air force with essentially the same plane.

In this short book, Daniel Ford tells the story of the bumbling Brewster Aeronautical company of Queens, New York, which struggled to produce a few hundred copies of its roly-poly warplane before it was finally seized by the government and used to build a competing fighter. Daniel Ford has spent a lifetime studying the wars of the past hundred years, from the Irish rebellion of 1916 to the counter-guerrilla operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. He is best known for his history of the American Volunteer Group--the 'Flying Tigers' of the Second World War--and his Vietnam novel that was filmed as Go Tell the Spartans, starring Burt Lancaster. Most recently, he has turned to the invasion of Poland in 1939 by Germany and Soviet Russia. Most of his books and many shorter pieces are available for Amazon's Kindle ebook reader. He lives and works in New Hampshire.

Superb story and update

I first read Dan Ford's article when it was printed in Air and Space, and enjoyed his strong compare and constrast history of the Buffalo. Much maligned in aviation histories, often cited as the worst aircraft of WW2 and yet a superb success in the hands of the Finns, compiling several records, including a kill rate of 135-0 in its first six months of operations in their hands, and an overall kill rate of 30.6 to one in action against increasingly improved planes in the hands of the Russians, all the while cut of from their sources of parts and supplies for the plane. In this e-book edition, Mr Ford has updated and enhanced his original work. He also maintains a superb website for those interested in learning more about the plane and its history with the RAF, the USN, USMC, Dutch, RAAF, RNZAF and of course, the Finns.
Like Mr. Ford, I have found this mixed result interesting, especially when you consider the Navy picked the Buffalo (F2A) over its replacement, the F4F.
For those interested in other related fields, he has written, and updated a magnificent history of the Flying Tigers, which is well worth reading!

A interesting quick read

A poor title the poor buffalo did better than the author would let you know. it's biggest failure was it's manufacter and the poor support it recieved from them. A deeper look will tell you that the Brits and Aussies did much better than what is told over Burma
and Malayasia. As for the Marine use at Midway it was inexpierenced pilots and poor tactics that led to the poor outcome.
In many ways the Buffalo performed as well as the F4F Wildcat. At this time Marine pilots were expected to be able to fly all type of aircraft and were rotated thru bombing and scouting squadrons The real cadre of fighter pilots were very small. Compared to the Finns use with highly expeienced pilots and the astounding kill ratio they achieved with a not very differnt airframe. It's really about pilot skill and tactics that can carry the day.

A short not particularly interesting book

Yes indeed this is a short, not particularly interesting book. Okay, I remember the Brewster Buffalo from my youth. While not nearly old enough to participate in WWII, living on the Southern Flyway we boys were able to see nearly every type of military aircraft in use by our forces. Buffalos no doubt flew over our family home though well before my interest had been aroused in aircraft spotting. Thus it was already considered obsolete by Pearl Harbor. Many had been turned over to GB for the defense of Singapore and . Thus little in this book was news to me though I did enjoy it as a review.

Great!

I love this book. As a guy who has been training in the martial arts since 1965 and who has written extensively on it for many years, I have often been critical of some of the ancient exercises as being unsound and dangerous. When I picked up The Art of Hojo Undo, I expected to see some of these. Not so. All of the exercises within the book are sound and highly beneficial for building power and strength overall, and power, strength, and speed in specific martial arts movements.

It's unlikely that you will build a Muscle Beach type of physique with these exercises, that is, one that's big on pretty but light on functional. The exercises discussed in this book will develop size, strength and power, but of the type that translates to your martial arts movements in ways that you never thought possible.

There's a new movement among exercise enthusiasts today that's not about wearing cute gym attire and chatting with friends around shiny exercise equipment in a brand named fitness facility. This "new" approach involves returning to the old ways of getting strong: flipping over giant truck tires, executing pull-ups on a 4x4 ceiling beam, and pressing large stones overhead. It's a 'what's-old-is-new-again" thing and, judging by the incredible results that its proponents are getting, it works wonderfully.

Much of the material in The Art of Hojo Undo is old school, which is not a bad thing. The exercises and routines - many of which go back several decades, some over a hundred years ago - are still being used today for one simple reason: they work, and they work well.

So if you're looking for a break from concentration curls and dumbbell flies - exercises that won't do a heck of a lot for your martial arts - do yourself a favor and get this book. Three months from now you will be amazed at your new speed, power and strength.

Lift things properly; hit things with care

As I continue along my life-long journey through this unique realm of martial arts research and science, the one constant I repetitively bump into is that what the ancient martial masters intuitively knew from practical experience about developing paradigms of training for the comprehensive development of warriors' minds, bodies, and spirits, contemporary scientific methods and critical thinking are confirming over and over again.

Mr. Clarke's, The Art of Hojo Undo (the art of supplemental training) reflects this truth throughout this well written, 201 page manual, detailing body strengthening exercises, not only in their appropriate historical context, but in a way that makes sense to an exercise physiologist, as well as the typical martial artist trainee.

There are numerous plates, black and white photographs and line-drawings throughout the book, which intensify the instructional richness of this manual.

The book is organized in an Introduction, elaborating on the ancient or historical methods of training that existed in Okinawa. Here we find that not only did the people of this Ryukyu Retto possess their own unique indigenous training methods, they also borrowed heavily from the Chinese.

Following the stage-setting introduction, we have the second chapter explicating preparation exercises known as junbi undo, designed to warm and loosen up the body for more intense exercises. These are free-standing movements where the practitioner uses no special equipment, merely the actions of one's own body.

The third chapter finds detailed prints and descriptions of various lifting tools that the Okinawan practitioners used to strength the movements of the body. Not only will we find the directions on how to execute the exercises with this equipment properly and safely, there are photographs supporting the directions. In addition to the instructional directives within the book, one finds detail descriptions on how to manufacture these tools with modern materials to reach a reasonably accurate facsimile of the historical designs. This is true of all the tools shown and described throughout the text and not just in chapter three.

Some of the lifting tools covered, with the appropriate exercises and manufacturing guidelines include: the makiagi, the chiishi, the double-handle chiishi, the nigiri gami, the tan, the ishi sashi and tetsu sashi, the kongoken, and the tetsu and ishi geta.

Being a former strength and conditioning coach, I found both the tools and methods of using the tools sound applications of modern day conditioning principles and concepts. Manufacturing these tools within the home setting would be easy enough from the directions provided in this manual, making for an opportunity to improved variety within one's personal training protocol.

The fourth chapter goes into detail about the various ways and means the Okinawan practitioners of yore used impact tools to tough and strength the movements of striking with the body's natural weapons. The devise that is uniquely Okinawan is present--the makiwara--along with old historical photographs of the Okinawan masters using the various impact tools discussed. Other tools are shown and the one in particular that I liked was a devise that is reminiscent of a European medieval Pell.

Again, the directions for making the variety of striking tools are clear and concise for the reader to follow.

The fifth chapter addresses ideas for conditioning the body through partner work designed to both strengthen and improve sensitivity to oppositional movement forthcoming from the partner.

The sixth chapter pertains to various auxiliary applications consisting of individual calisthenics and partnered exercises with the goal for strengthening different portions of an individual's body.

The seventh chapter finds the reader discovering a unique collection of contemporary and older tools used to condition and strength movements of the human structure. There is the tetsuwa or iron ring, the ishibukuro or stone sack, heavy bag and smaller-heavy bag devises, with others shown being typically modern in construction.

The final chapter owns the comments from Okinawan masters' discussion of hojo undo or supplemental training to martial arts practice, all believing such training is both needed and beneficial for one's complete development as a martial artist, regardless of the discipline.

The book is a well-constructed and balanced text of historical perspective, academic study and practical application of just what is hojo undo, how to safely engage in such training, how to construct the tools from modern materials, and what the benefits may be from the proper use of this supplemental training paradigm.

It is this reviewer's conclusion that the plethora of older, historical exercise methods from the Ryukyu Islands as documented within this training manual, if utilized with the appropriate principles of conditioning--progressive overload, attention to intensity and movement specificity--will be an added bonus to any martial practitioner striving to better his or her kinesthetic awareness and strengths for whatever their particular martial endeavor may be. Plus, it simply looks fun to make and use the tools shown in this book--something that I believe helps us to solidly connect with the overall traditional spirit of martial practice.

All traditional karateka should read this book

When I glanced through this tome my first thought was that any book with forewords by three 8th dan black belts and one 10th dan black belt has got to be good. After perusing the materials I quickly discovered that it wasn't just good, it was great!

While a few books (including a couple of my own) touch on the subject of hojo undo (supplementary training), I found The Art of Hojo Undo uniquely comprehensive and utterly fascinating. The only thing that even comes close was a book by famous karateka Morio Higaonna, which has been out of print for decades. Topics include lifting tools such as makiage (wrist roller), chiishi (stone weights), nigiri gami (gripping jars), and ishisashi (stone padlock), impact tools such as makiwara (striking post), tou (bamboo bundle), jari bako (sand box), and kakite bikei (blocking post), body conditioning exercises, partner drills, and auxiliary exercises, along with some interesting comments on hojo undo by a couple of Okinawan karate masters.

The author has a very engaging writing style. A practitioner since 1973, he has tons of practical knowledge and experience to share with his readers. Packed with rare and unique photographs, clear illustrations, and articulate instructions this book is a wonderful resource for classical martial artists. I wholeheartedly recommend it.

This work executes a unique transdisciplinary methodology building on the author’s previous book, A User’s Guide to the Crisis of Civilization: And How to Save it (Pluto, 2010), which was the first peer-reviewed study to establish a social science framework for the integrated analysis of crises across climate, energy, food, economic, terror and the police state. Since the 2008 financial crash, the world has witnessed an unprecedented outbreak of social unrest in every major continent. Beginning with the birth of the Occupy movement and the Arab Spring, the eruption of civil disorder continues to wreak havoc unpredictably from Greece to Ukraine, from China to Thailand, from Brazil to Turkey, and beyond. Yet while policymakers and media observers have raced to keep up with events, they have largely missed the biophysical triggers of this new age of unrest – the end of the age of cheap fossil fuels, and its multiplying consequences for the Earth’s climate, industrial food production, and economic growth. This book for the first time develops an empirically-ground theoretical model of the complex interaction between biophysical processes and geopolitical crises, demonstrated through the analysis of a wide range of detailed case studies of historic, concurrent and probable state failures in the Middle East, Northwest Africa, South and Southeast Asia, Europe and North America. Geopolitical crises across these regions, Ahmed argues, are being driven by the proliferation of climate, food and economic crises which have at their root the common denominator of a fundamental and permanent disruption in the energy basis of industrial civilization. This inevitable energy transition, which will be completed well before the close of this century, entails a paradigm shift in the organization of civilization. Yet for this shift to result in a viable new way of life will require a fundamental epistemological shift recognizing humanity’s embeddedness in the natural world. For this to be achieved, the stranglehold of conventional models achieved through the hegemony of establishment media reporting – dominated by fossil fuel interests – must be broken. While geopolitics cannot be simplistically reduced to the biophysical, this book shows that international relations today can only be understood by recognizing the extent to which the political is embedded in the biophysical. Dr Nafeez Ahmed is an award-winning investigative journalist, bestselling author and noted international security scholar. He is listed in the Evening Standard's 2014 and 2015 ‘Progress 1000’ selection of the most globally influential Londoners.
Ahmed is a columnist for VICE’s science and technology magazine, Motherboard, and for the London-based digital news platform Middle East Eye. He is a former environment blogger at The Guardian where he reported on the geopolitics of interconnected environmental, energy and economic crises via his Earth Insight blog. He has also written and reported for The Independent, Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, The Scotsman, Foreign Policy, The Atlantic, Quartz, Prospect, New Statesman, Le Monde diplomatique, Raw Story, Asia Times, among many others.Ahmed has twice won the Project Censored Award for his journalism, in 2014 for his story on the energy geopolitics behind the Ukraine crisis, and in 2013 for his article on food riots as a ‘new normal.’
Ahmed’s book, A User’s Guide to the Crisis of Civilization: And How to Save It (Pluto, 2010), was the first integrated peer-reviewed study of the intersection of climate change, energy depletion, food scarcity, economic instability, terrorism and state-militarisation. In 2010, he won the Routledge-GCP&S Essay Prize for his seminal paper presenting the social science framework for the book in the journal Global Change, Peace and Security, “The International Relations of Crisis and the Crisis of International Relations.”

Nafeez's academic work revolves around the historical sociology and political ecology of mass violence in the context of civilizational systems, and focuses on bridging disciplinary divides across the natural and social sciences. He has taught international politics, contemporary history, empire and globalisation at the University of Sussex’s School of Global Studies and Brunel University’s Politics & History Unit. Nations collapse after peak oil production reduces revenue made worse by drought, water scarcity, social unrest

This book was published by top scientific and engineering publisher Springer, and is part of the group that also owns Nature magazine, the most prestigious journal in the world (tied with Science magazine).

Ahmed’s book is about the biophysical factors that bring nations down, such as drought and water scarcity exacerbated by climate change and high population growth at a time when less and less food can be grown. The hardest hit nations are past their peak production of oil, so there is less and less revenue to buy or subsidize food and water, which leads to social unrest, which worsens all the other factors. On average, this causes nations 15 years past peak oil production to experience systemic state failure.

Ahmed points out that “because these and other factors are so nested and interconnected, even small perturbations and random occurrences in one can amplify effects on other parts of the system, sometimes in a feedback process that continues. If thresholds are reached, these tipping points can re-order the whole system”. These ecological and geological factors result in social disorder, which makes it even harder for government to do anything, such as putting more money into water and food production infrastructure, which accelerates climate change and energy decline impacts, which leads to even more violence at an accelerating rate until state failure.

The media and experts blame it on poor government, usually ignoring the real reasons because all they know is politics and economics. Perhaps this is because journalists have bought into the free-market ideology of economists, who ignore the role of energy and natural resources as the basis of our fossil-fueled civilization and see the world only through money and credit, because they can't imagine limits to growth on a finite planet, since The Market and Human Ingenuity will always come up with Something Else, regardless of the laws of physics and thermodynamics (perhaps they're so used to breaking financial laws that they don't see why the Laws of Nature can't be overcome either). Energy and natural resources are completely ignored in their fancy and fanciful equations.

For example, if you cut a forest down and sell the lumber for $500 million, you've added $500 million to the GDP. But when water treatment plants downstream have to spend $500 million more to treat the water, $500 million is ADDED to GDP, not subtracted. Nor is the cost of soil erosion on farmland that floods after the forest is cut down, sending poisonous pesticides downstream and eutrophication killing off fisheries in the Gulf, or the shortening of the productive lifespan of the topsoil on the farms from 1500 years to 300 years and the consequent cost of the lost food production for a millennia, since soil takes 500 to 1000 years to regenerate.

As it is, Saudi Arabia is expected to stop exporting oil by 2030 due to both declining oil production and increasing population (Saudi Arabia's population has grown 8-fold since 1960), and BAM! -- down goes India and China, who are well past their own peak oil production. In my opinion, failing Middle East states may destabilize the few exporting countries like Saudi Arabia before 2030. And that will hasten the end of the oil age, since the ME has 2/3 of the remaining oil reserves, leaving plenty of oil in the ground if social unrest, war, and/or terrorism lower oil production, or even destroy the oil infrastructure. After the ensuing dark age, it may be hard to get back to the same level of technology as before to get the remaining oil out.

Ignore and hate these truths if you like, but unlike fake news, Ahmed has hundreds of citations to back up the points he makes.
