Matthew Pustz is the author of Comic Book Culture: Fanboys and True Believers. He has a Ph.D. in American Studies from the University of Iowa and has taught history, American Studies, and Humanities courses in Iowa and Massachusetts.

Useful but Uneven

Part of the growing academic literature on comic books, I enjoyed this edited volume though, like all edited volumes, my enjoyment varied with the topics of each contribution. Since my own interests lie in the intersection of politics and cultural globalization, I was impressed by Martin Lund's contribution on Superman as a Golem, on John Donovan's reading of the anti-Communist "Fighting American" series, and Peter Lee's chapter on the early-1970s kung fu craze. That being said, at the end of the day this is still an academic, rather than popular, piece of non-fiction, and as a result several of the contributions tend to get bogged down in theoretical discussions that will leave non-academic readers frustrated. In addition, several of the chapters require a fairly high degree of intimacy with specific characters or series in order to take much away from them. Indeed, one of the weaknesses of several chapters, especially Donovan's, is the linearity of the arguments; long digressions on which artist inked whose pencils, for example, don't offer me much value. As an educator, the most valuable contributions in the book were Jessamyn Neuhaus's and Bridget M. Marshall's chapters on using comic books as classroom resources.

Bill O' Reilly as he narrates the audio book. He censors his own Audio book . Needs to be labeled as a Censored Audio Book

Bought the book and I loved it. Purchased the book again as an Ibook and downloaded it to my Iphone.. Love Bill O' Riellys and Martin Dugards work. I bought "killing Lincoln" , "Killing Kennedy" they were OK. Required discipline to force myself to read them through. Purchased their latest book, "Killing the Rising Sun" . They did it again, I could not put it down. I wanted to read "Killing Patton" again, so I bought it as an audio book on CD for my long commute. That was a mistake. Sorry Mr. O'Reilly no offense meant. Bill O' Rielly does the narrating of the audio Book on this 7 cd set. He is terrible. I have listened to many audio Books since the late 80's on my commutes. Bill O' Rielly does not read the book, He reports it. Bill O' Reilly Quotes Patton in his book as saying "Patton believes that profanity is the language of the soldier" When Bill O'Riely reads the profanity contained and written in his own book or Bill O'Reilly is quoting Patton, Bill O'Reilly censors himself and uses the Letter "F" as in "F " this or "F" that or "F"ing this or "F" ing that . In place of the actual words .
In my opinion. If the profanity that is written and contained in the book you co authored and wrote, offends you. Then as you say in your audio book . You should have let someone else narrate the "F" ing audio book. Your decision to censor yourself as you narrate this book. Takes the power or the impact away from what Patton is saying. ( Maybe Its the Marine In me ). Either way, I did not intend to buy an audio book that is censored. Do not buy this audio book, unless you want an audio book that is published with "Parental Controls". Bill O'Rielly does not do, the individual voices of the various characters that are contained and speak in the book. His reporting / reading of the audio book, is monotoned reporting. Reminiscent of sitting through an art history class and having a monotoned professor reading the text book to you, for the duration of his class. As an audio book, Its terrible. As a book that you hold or download and read. "Killing Patton" is a book you cannot put down . Bill O'Reilly should have left the reading of his audio book to a audio artist or a skillful narrator. His reporting / reading of his own book is too monotoned and BORING...............

About the Author

Dr. Tonny J. Oyana received his Ph.D and his postdoctoral training from the University of Buffalo, New York, USA. He is currently the director of spatial analytics and informatics, Research Center for Health Disparities, Equity, and the Exposome; and a professor of spatial information systems in the Department of Preventive Medicine at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, Knoxville, USA. His research focuses on establishing the relationship between environmental health and exposure; advancing GIS methods, algorithm design, and spatial analytical methods; and understanding the factors that contribute toward land systems change. In addition, he has authored more than 80 scientific works.

Dr. Florence M. Margai (now deceased) was a professor in the Department of Geography at Binghamton University, New York, USA, where she taught courses that reflected her areas of specialization: advanced statistics, environmental health hazards, health disparities, and environmental analysis using geospatial and visualization technologies. She also served as the associate dean of Harpur College of Arts and Sciences, Vestal, New York, USA. Margai obtained her Ph.D from Kent State University, Ohio, USA, and worked with nonprofit organizations to assist in the geographic targeting of vulnerable population groups for disease intervention and health promotional campaigns, sustainability, and capacity development initiatives.

This book gives a useful foundation in GIS with examples

This book gives a useful foundation in GIS with examples. If you're a beginner and you're wanting to start with the basics, this is the book to go with. It will give you a foundation in GIS AND statistics. The only downside is that it does not come with a GIS program key (in other words, you cannot get a temporary ArcGIS license or anything like that).

Sensational beautiful story by the talented Suzan Tisdale. This one will melt your heart so beautifully written

In this story originally in The Scrolls of Cridhe, Highland Winds, Volume one is about a woman Moirra with Four daughter looks for a temporary husband to help with her small farm until the harvest and then he is free to leave. So in other words in a marriage in name only although Morirra who has had several husbands already is no maid and doesn't seem To object to the idea of sharing a blanket with this handsome strange whom she call John Pilory since he won't share his true name. after all that is where she met. She also has secrets and does not know about that John Pilory odes not know.

John Pilory is running away from his past well to be honest he was kicked out puf his clan by his own Father calling him a whoreson and drunk. Which was true but then a tragedy on the family changes John forever as he is not longer the whoreson, drunk his family thinks. Yet for being at the wrong p
'lace at the wrong time he is set up by thr true the true thieves and has been spending the last four day days in the Pilory to say his mood is not good is understatement. Smelling and having rotten vegetables thrown at at you is not a pleasant experience to John. When beautiful Moirra makes him an offer he just can't refuse as first raising suspicions like he is being set upon by someone's idea of a joke.
Moira worries her daughters will gets too attached to John and started to love just when it is is time for him to leave. Or is is Moirra's own heart she needs to protects and heart broke when it is time for him to leave. John seems to be able to get alone with all of Moirra's daughters excepts eldest .

What a wonderful,fast paced, mysterious and adventurous novella I can't wait to read part two of this series and really find out how things turn out for this unlikely couple. As definitely not looking too good for Morirra! I really felt for this couple as they both have not had an easy path in life yet both have a bright outlook even when thing looked really grave and it was interesting to see how they both start to blossom as they get to know each other yet they both have pasts and secrets that neither want to discuss.

I found it interesting because under normal circumstances they would never have met as John brought up in wealth and Moirra just a little above poverty. I actually found Moirra teaching John life's lessons. Yet what happens after the harvest do they go there separate ways or do they decide to get a chance and open their hearts and take a chance on that thing called love. Something neither one is that familiar with.

Another sensational book by Suzan Tisdale you won't want to miss this one!

I was happy to discover another one of Suzan Tisdale's books! After reading her Clan MacDougall and Clan Graham series, I'm a fan. This was a short read, but instantly drew me in with the unusual beginning. I like that her characters are very like able, but aren't perfect, they have faults and shadows in their past. In this book John / Alyssander and Moirra aren't rich, titled, favored or starry eyed virgins, they are both adults who have lived life with both happiness and losses. Although it's great escapism to get lost in a good historical romance, it makes the characters more interesting and multi-faceted. I found myself definitely rooting for this little family and look forward to their on-going adventures.

Suzan Tisdale is yet another one of the Queens of Scottish Romance. You fall in love with her characters. If you really like a good story that makes you laugh until tears are pouring out of your eyes and yet suspenseful and a fast paced,page turner and all around good story. This is the story for you! Second one in series, pretty good...

This is the second installment of the 6 books in the series. It was Matt's time to stay at the house in Tahoe, but due to unexpected business, he had to switch his month with his brother Luke. Luke had not spoken to his twin in years, ever since their father made them compete against each other. Luke accepts because he wanted to honor their dead friend's wish. Luke believes his twin cheated him out of their family business so he set out to become a millionaire on his own. When Luke finds out his brother is trying to sabotage another one of his deals, he sets out to find revenge. Lauren is Matt's new fiancee. She goes to Tahoe trying to break the arranged engagement, only she did not expect to find Luke so attractive, interesting and charming. Lauren doesn't realize it was Luke in Tahoe and not Matt.

Luke is attracted to Lauren, Lauren is the type of woman Luke likes and not Matt. Luke pretends to be Matt to get closer to Lauren, only he didn't expect to want her for himself. Yet another thing to be jealous about. He was content with their current relatioship except when Matt barges in on them and she finds out Luke has been deceiving her the entire time.

Great story, yes the premise is deception, but at the end it was for the best since Lauren and Luke were the perfect fit and Matt had no feelings for her. Family drama and misunderstandings are present, good story overall

Wrong Twin + Right Girl = Forbidden Love

Can we say Fantasy Girl come to life!! Luke finds himself having to take his month at Hunter's cabin earlier than anticipated, but it was starting to look up when at his front door is his walking, talking Fantasy girl. Only problem with Lauren is that she is his estranged twin brother's fiancee, and she thinks he is Matt.

Lauren came to the cabin to break off her arranged engagement to a man she barely knows, but when she arrives she is feeling thins for this man that she has never felt before. He has a way of setting her body on fire with just one look. Where did that come from? Now she isn't sure of her decision to break off the engagement. Maybe her parents picked the perfect man for her after all.

I have to say, aside from the abrupt ending, I really enjoyed the build up of the relationship between Luke and Lauren. You can't hate Luke for deceiving Lauren, because she felt the heat too, and she deserved to finally have the intimacy that she had been searching for with her other fiancee's.

Christie gives us some HOTT love makin and some very sexy naked male in a hot tub....ummm HELLO....who wouldn't want that!!

Its a quick read, with some smokin hot sexual tension and a romance between two lost souls!! Liked it a lot!! But I always like reading Christie's books.

About the Author
Pete Snustad has served as Dean of Undergraduate Studies at UMN and continues to teach Genetics every year. He received his Ph.D. at the University of California, Davis.

Not For Musicians!

I had wanted a book maybe titled "Genetics for Dummies", but having found none, I settled for this one. Genetics - granted - is a
VERY difficult subject, and I was hoping this might come just a little close to my hopes. No dice. This a a large, heavy TEXTBOOK on the subject, and it's taking me more than a WEEK (not reading everyday) to just get past the 2 or 3 page introduction..

Very complex subject (of course), and I would presume perfect for those who have a *little* background in basic biology. [Musician don't get biology courses in their degree programs.]

Small font, compact chapters and sub-chapters. I intend to stay with it a little longer, with hope that it will begin to 'clarify' soon. A fairly large book: 11" x 9" x 1-1/2" thick. Well illustrated.

Fantastic textbook on genetics for beginners

I am majoring in Psychology with little background on Genetics.

I purchased this book to prepare for the GRE Subject test (Biochemistry, Cell & Molecular Biology) and i couldn't be more pleased with my order!

The explanations are easy to follow but the text covers ALL major aspects of Genetics (Classic & Modern). The illustrations are top notch.

I preferred this edition over the newer one because of the price tag. It's 50% cheaper and the ONLY difference is in the cosmetics of the pictures.
