Splatter Punk meets Manga

Magical Girl Apocalypse is gory, nasty, goofy and moves at a break neck pace. The set up is brief, and within the first few pages blood is being spilled, flesh is being ripped and creepy girls are screaming "magical". Oh, and there are zombies. Magical girl zombies who are strong enough to smash someone's head with one fist.

First off, this book is gory. No, not just violent. Gory. Characters are not just killed, but ripped to shreds, and it is all drawn in dripping, stomach churning detail. Anyone and everyone can, and most likely will, die in horrific and brutal ways. This is both a strength of this book, and a weakness. It's a strength in that the stakes are sky high, and the reader is never made to feel comfortable. It weakens the book in the fact, that outside of the two main characters, the reader is not given a group of characters to connect with. While the group starts to solidify a bit towards the end, it is hard to become invested in any one particular character when you realize how disposable they are. Still, if a character annoys you (and there are a few that have major potential) just rest easy knowing that in a page or two they will probably be burned alive, or be sliced in half. So... yay!

This volume is almost all set up. It is establishing the threat, and the many creepy cute forms it can take. Once the attack starts (and that is within the first five or ten pages), the pace never slows. There are a few quick glimpses as to what is causing the attack, and maybe a vague hint or two as to who or what may be behind the sudden appearance of the magical girls, but the actually plot is very limited, as most of the page count is spent on characters fleeing, and more often than not, dying violently. There is some humor to be found in these pages, and with the over the top nature of the whole story, it fits well.

The magical girls themselves are very creepy, with a wide eyed, doll like appearance that is in sharp contrast to the more typical manga looking main characters. Their clothes, weapons, and lifeless faces are wonderfully designed, and show real skill and creativity. The human characters are varied looking, with detailed expressions, although there are some issues when it comes to the female characters, with some one of the more well endowed characters chests not only defying physics, but also basic anatomy. Still, each character has a distinct look and feel, and in a cast this large, that is key to helping the reader keep the who's who straight. The gore, as I said, is drawn in detail. Heads are ripped open or blown off, holes are blown through bodies, people are impaled, ripped in half... you get the idea. Obviously, this book is not for the weak stomached or the sensitive.

If you are looking for a true splatter manga, then Magical Girl Apocalypse is perfect for you. If you are looking for actual magic girls, though, look elsewhere.

Unexpectedly, the worst of all possible apocalypses

Wow. Just... wow. I find myself at a bit of a loss as to how to describe this book, which is better than it has a right to be given the totally gonzo premise. If you thought "Madoka Magica" gave the magical girl genre a scary twist, you haven't seen anything yet.

So, a bit of minor first-chapter plot stuff first... [MINOR SPOILERS, BUT NO MORE THAN IS ON THE JACKET COPY] Teenager Kii is having a run-of-the-mill day at high school when a freaky little girl in a gothic Lolita outfit (pictured on the front cover) blasts through his classroom window while he's in the bathroom. He returns to a bloodbath, arriving just in time to see the last of his friends killed by this menace. He manages to temporarily defeat her and discovers that at least one classmate did survive -- Tsukune, a painfully shy girl who was once a good friend of his and who has lately been the victim of bullying. But then the magical girl revives, and his dead classmates start to rise... wearing frilly dresses. [END MINOR SPOILER]

MGA wins points in several areas. The artwork, while sometimes gory and gruesome to the point of repulsive, is excellent and appropriate for the story it's telling. Also, don't worry that the whole thing looks like "Sailor Moon, Directed by Tim Burton" -- only the magical girls look like that, and the setting and other characters are drawn in a more normal style. Also, the suspense factor is through the roof with this story. Imagine if a zombie event on the level of "Dawn of the Dead" occurred, only the zombie hordes were being led by intelligent beings with superhero-level powers and insatiable bloodlust. Not since "Marvel Zombies" have I seen an apocalypse I'd be more desperate to avoid, and the very idea that a normal person could survive this for the duration seems unthinkable. I read the whole book in one sitting.

On the negative side, MGA only wins originality points for its combination, not its execution. The similarities to "High School of the Dead" (very much) and "Madoka Magica" (somewhat) are strong enough that this hellscape feels like retread ground in a lot of ways. The plot so far has also been minimal -- the action is happening too fast for anything beyond individual character development to occur, and the apocalypse comes unexplained. (I think I may have already figured it out based on the "Chekov's Gun" principle, but time will tell on that.) And finally, the gore might be too much for even some hardened horror-hounds. There are some seriously twisted deaths in this thing.

Overall, I would rate "Magical Girl Apocalypse" about 3.5 stars, but I'll give it the benefit of a doubt and bump it up to 4. It did keep me on the edge of my seat, and I will be coming back to see what happens.

Too dang good.

This Manga is really good. I tell anybody to read this manga and continue to read it. The first volume might turn people off in the slightest, but the awesome story gets better and better through each chapter and volume. I encourage anybody to read this Manga. This is really gory as hell and the idea of zombie like magical girl's is awesome.

Get the 10th Edition!

The 10th edition of this book is actually much better than the 11th (I bought both for my I/O PSY class). Chapters 9-13 are particularly insightful. I sold my 11th edition but will be keeping the 10th. The 10th edition is also the last edition written solely by Muchinsky, before his death last year. Sadly, the 11th edition deletes a lot of Muchinsky's personal insights. His insights about teams and teamwork from Chapter 9, in particular, can easily be applied to other "teams," such as families. A great book for any psychologist, not just I/O psychologists.

Well organized, easy to follow, and the chapters aren't padded with unnecessary length. Easier to read than some other psych texts and very relatable.

The information is useful but the style of writing is very very very dry. The text is dry in the sense that there are numerous instances where he could have used simpler ways to describe a concept but instead he opted for more bigger words and repetition. The colored bubbles with case info. are more helpful as they provide an insight into real life application. I had to read it for a class but every time I open the book to study I just felt dreaded.

Also, the book is printed on glossy paper and it's really difficult to read the text with all the shiny reflections.

Farmer is a physician-anthropologist who directs the Program in Infectious Disease and Social Change at Harvard Medical School. He also has clinical practices in Boston and in Haiti, where he has done extensive fieldwork with Haiti's rural poor. Aiming to explain why infectious diseases such as AIDS and tuberculosis target the poor, he fills his new work with harrowing public-health case studies of the pathogenic effects of poverty and other grim social conditions. Farmer provides a well-referenced analysis of everything from cell-mediated immunity to healthcare access issues. The studies outlined show that extreme poverty, filth, and malnutrition are associated with infectious disease and what attitudes and behaviors contribute to the lack of understanding about disease. Arguing that the predictors of patient compliance are fundamentally "economic not cognitive or cultural," he builds a powerful and persuasive argument for a proactive multinational program to defuse the "infectious disease time-bomb." What causes tuberculosis in humans? In the late 19th century, the German microbiologist Robert Koch thought the answer was unambiguous: the tubercle bacillus, which he discovered in 1882. Since then, Koch's laboratory model of the transmission of infectious disease, subsequently articulated in eponymous postulates, has dominated explanations of the causes of infectious diseases. Nonetheless, as early as the 1890s, some physicians expressed doubt about the adequacy of any laboratory model for explaining the vagaries of communicable disease in humans. For example, during a debate in 1894 on the advisability of public registration of persons with tuberculosis, William Osler observed that a person's "material condition" rendered him or her "more or less immune." He continued by offering an analogy: in clinical tuberculosis, the "soil, then, has a value equal almost to that which relates to the seed."

In Infections and Inequalities, Paul Farmer, who was trained in both infectious diseases and anthropology, uses these disciplines and his medical experience in Haiti to provide a trenchant analysis of the biologic and social realities of chronic infectious disease.

For Farmer, the causes of tuberculosis and AIDS, the two epidemics this book addresses, have as much to do with social inequality as they do with microorganisms. Using data mostly from Haiti, where he has worked since 1983, in addition to data from the United States and Peru, Farmer argues that social and economic inequalities "have powerfully sculpted not only the distribution of infectious diseases but also the course of health outcomes among the afflicted." The pathogenic agency of inequality is so great, Farmer maintains, that "inequality itself constitutes our modern plague," a statement he seeks to demonstrate in the balance of the book. In doing so, he repeatedly acknowledges the work of his mentor Arthur Kleinman, economist Amartya Sen, epidemiologist Richard Wilkinson, and others whose work in a variety of disciplines over the past two decades has focused attention on inequality and lack of social cohesion and their adverse effects on health. There are two distinctive aspects of Farmer's approach. First, Farmer has been a social activist since the early 1980s, when, as a medical student doing elective course work in Haiti, he began a long-term project to improve the health of rural Haitians -- the Clinique Bon Sauveur, which now sees more than 30,000 patients per year and trains hundreds of Haitian health care workers. Second, Farmer uses his experience as an activist to discuss critically the conventional wisdom about anthropology and infectious disease, specifically the causes of emerging infection.

Anthropological analysis falls short in explaining the causation of disease, Farmer argues, when it emphasizes personality and culture but slights barriers to the delivery of health care. For example, he takes aim at anthropologists who explain the failure of tuberculosis-control programs among poor Haitians as the result of either an inadequate understanding of local culture on the part of the practitioners or the supernatural beliefs of the locals, or both. It is not that cultural analysis is unimportant, Farmer writes, but rather that it misses the point when it does not place cultural perspectives in a socioeconomic context. Among patients in Haiti's rural Central Plateau who were offered free and convenient care for tuberculosis, compliance and outcome were strongly related only to nutrition and income and not to beliefs about the cause of the illness.

Farmer also derides the anthropological studies of the 1980s that explained the emergence of AIDS in Haiti as the consequence of "exotic" indigenous practices such as voodoo. Instead, Farmer argues, these researchers should have emphasized local and regional socioeconomic conditions that impeded effective care and promoted dissemination of the human immunodeficiency virus. Emphasizing the role of culture, and not the roles of poverty and inequality, in infectious disease can even cause harm. Exaggerating the importance of individual actions may cause makers of public health policy to ignore effective measures for improving health care.

Although Farmer thinks epidemiologists are generally alert to the role of social factors in emerging infection, he also believes that their typical unit of analysis, the nation-state, tends to obscure the disproportionate damage that infections wreak on poor communities in larger jurisdictions. For example, in 1992 the rate of tuberculosis in central Harlem, New York City, at 222 cases per 100,000 population, exceeded that of many Third World countries, a fact that disappears in the epidemiologic profile of tuberculosis for the entire United States. As a countermeasure, Farmer promotes a "critical epistemology" of emerging infectious diseases that explores in detail how poverty and inequality cause infectious diseases to emerge in specific local contexts. Hypothetical questions formulated with this approach might include the following: "By what mechanisms have international changes in agriculture shaped recent outbreaks of Argentine and Bolivian hemorrhagic fever, and how do these mechanisms derive from international trade agreements such as GATT [the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade] and NAFTA [the North American Free Trade Agreement]?"

Farmer answers the questions he poses by mixing his theory and epidemiologic data with numerous personal anecdotes of his encounters with patients, an approach that renders his account poignant. Infections and Inequalities consists of 10 chapters, half of which are essays that were published from 1990 to 1996 in books or journals. Instead of sustained discussions of structural violence, inequality, tuberculosis, AIDS, and other important themes and subjects, the reader encounters numerous short passages on the same subject or theme in different essays. This is a loss, since the redundancy and lack of sustained exposition of some of the book's important themes, aside from making for occasionally choppy reading, mean that definitions of some of Farmer's key concepts, such as structural violence, remain implied rather than explicit.

Complex causality: why people are really at risk for disease

Finally Dr. Farmer couples his lucid historical, political and economic analyses of the conditions that put the poor at risk for bad health outcomes, with a plainly indignant calling out of healthcare professionals and healthcare organizations to make honest efforts to understand and remedy conditions which would never be tolerated among the well off in Western nations. In his goundbreaking, earlier books, "AIDS and Accusations," and "The Uses of Haiti," Dr. Farmer matter of factly discusses the global and local structural conditions and misrepresentations which led to the spread of disease and persistent, dismal health conditions in Haiti. In "Infections and Inequality," Dr. Farmer adds moral overtones to incisive, sociopolitical analysis and his characteristic accounts of individuals suffering from disease. The book consequently provides a powerful reflection from a man who has worked in some of the world's poorest regions on what the benefits of medical technology mean for people who have not traditionally had access to them. A powerful, informative read that clearly reflects the years of experience of a physician who has wrestled with the global responsibility of caring for the those who are worst off. An obligatory read for anyone even thinking of working for the impoverished of the world.

Essential Guide!

This book gives detailed information on how to work within a given format and also how to decide on and develop a format for your own print media and web design. I found the examples and case studies fascinating; covering the spectrum of books, magazines, posters, objects, screen and brochures. The authors provided plenty of details for all the examples, which I have found useful when further researching an image of interest.

I work in education and I've read much of the literature on immigration available through official channels. This book has been a revelation, it is by far the most accurate and truthful work on a subject dominated by PC bullying and misinformation. Having to work where pro-immigration propaganda is standard you begin to doubt the evidence of your own eyes and wonder if the world has gone mad. Thanks to this book I know that there is at least one voice out there speaking for the silent majority on this issue and I commend the author for his courage.

Great Read with Great Advice!

Since Kaizen means "change for the better", the title of the book explains the content. The author does a great job taking the reader from the history of Kaizen to the final chapter that discusses accessing little used parts of the brain to develop "Whole Brain Goodness" This book delivers a well written road map for developing success habits that will stick. Michael has left out the fluff that normally makes up about 50% of self help programs. He is very to the point about getting from point A to Z in a logical and well established plan that is both interesting and logical. The book is a quick read and worth the very low price. Good job Michael. Highly recommended!

Great Self-Help book!

I really enjoy reading self-help books, and I thought this book by Michael Cesar is just brilliant. In a short 27 pages, he basically teaches us a technique that can help us for the rest of our lives: Kaizen. The author fully illustrates how Kaizen principles can be successful and helpful in everyday life, as well as offer tips to help us succeed. While this is an easy read, I find that it's packed with information and ways I can improve my life. Fantastic!

'Success Habits' are things that anyone can develop. Success is not merely for those who were 'born into a good life'. As a girl who's struggled financially, but is also slowly building her own business- I am constantly on the outlook for books that can improve my ability to find success in this world. This was definitely one of those books. I sat down and delved into this book head first. I've read quite a few self-help books oriented at business success, but this is one that I feel absolutely anyone could benefit from. Whether you're running your own business, working for someone else's business, or merely attempting to find a job and succeed in a financial sense- this book can help.

This book takes you through the small steps you need to make in order to get organized and find success in your life. I've read quite a few books in this genre and I always feel like I can walk away from them with one or two things that really impact my attitude, outlook, and ability to succeed. This book managed to do that as well. It focuses on things ANYONE can do. Not major life changes, but small things you can change in order to become a better and more successful person.

The book takes you through the entire process you need to walk through in order to become more successful. It lays out the fundamentals of success for you, telling you what the most successful people in corporate America have done to get to the place they are currently at. It helps you find a starting point and determine where you're at, and where you need to work from. It shows you how to take baby steps, working slowly towards your goals in a way that you won't get discouraged, you'll constantly be moving forward, and you can handle roadblocks in an effective manner. And then it shows you how when you put in effort, things happen. It's all about purposely making changes and forcing the world around you to change with you. When you strive for success, success is going to find you. Hard work DOES pay off- but it's a slow process. It's about working towards something, seeing the bigger picture, and finding yourself amidst made dreams before you know it.

This book was very motivational, well-written, and well-organized. It wasn't your typical self-help book, and it doesn't list out exact directions. Rather it gives you basic tools you can use to create your own direction in life. As a girl who's determined to be self-made, this book was definitely worth reading for me- and I highly recommend it to other people ready to find success as well.

I loved this book. The action in adventure in this one keeps you "turning the page"
I could not sleep until I finished this book. I found this author to have unique voice in this tale of adventure and misbehavior. The characters are well developed, the plotline is excellent, and the book hooks you from page one.
I will definitely be looking for more from this author.

Just give me more - now please. What a tale, if my airline operator goes bust this is where I want to be. Highty tighty back packing heroine and a tricky daredevil hero - Sly Stallone meets Errol Flynn - fight there way through the Amazon facing adversity with courage and discovering themselves and each other on this tumultuous romantic adventure. The wit and humour had me giggling out loud and the next moment my heart was thumping like a sledgehammer with their cliffhanging predicaments. Ms Williams has surpassed herself, the descriptions are stunning, characters have personality and vavavoom, the baddy is despicable and this surely must be just the first installment of a new exciting series of adventure romance novels. So different from A Fallen Fortune What more can I say except 'Well Done and Thankyou'!

This book was a pure joy. A great adventure in an exotic locale with a riveting mix of romance, conflict and strong characters. Jack is strapping and resourceful; Anne is feisty and determined. Together they are pure sexual tension, a powder keg of simmering lust looking to explode any second. Filled with laugh-out-loud humor, nail-biting situations and engaging dialogue, Tinted Lenses is perfect to be read aloud and shared with someone you love.
