Abnett is Gifted
By A Customer
I didn't like this book nearly as much as First & Only (or Eye of Terror), but it was still a fun read. I really got sucked in to the characters from the first book and wanted to follow their further exploits. While First & Only had a strong plot that held it together, this book is more of a collection of war stories. They read like they may have already appeared in Inferno! (the Warhammer fiction zine). I'm not a big fan of straight combat/action fiction, so this was somewhat disappointing. What saves it is the fact that Abnett is a truly great writer who really rises above this genre of game fiction. The war stories are interrupted by these almost poetic tableaus of the Tanith troops between battles: A soldier obsessively cleaning his gun, the MASH unit quiet and waiting for the coming onslaught of carnage, a General sharing coffee and small talk with the company cook. These bits are very effective counterpoint to the ferocious battles of the surrounding chapters.
I'm hooked. I can't wait for the next "Gaunt's Ghosts" book, I just hope that Abnett spends more time developing a compelling story arc and less time on the battlefield reportage.

A good sequel to Tanith First and Only
By A. Sandoc
Dan Abnett follows up his first Gaunt's Ghosts novel --- Tanith First and Only --- with Ghostmaker and he does a good job to keep fans of the original hooked with the story. It doesn't rise above the original, but the characterization of major and secondary characters are explored abit further.

Ghostmaker also further explains the current Crusade campaign the regiment is on. Politics become an issue as well. Jealousy from other regiments with a more storied history helps add abit of a subplot to the main story. Gaunt and his men are put through the wringer as they accept missions or put into dangerous situations that slowly dwindle their numbers. This is sad and poignant for the fact that without a homeworld to call home anymore, they have no way of replenishing their regiment like other Imperial Guard units. This also means that for every Tanith who falls in battle, more of their homeworld and people's culture disappear. It really adds meaning to the title of Ghostmaker.

I would recommend this book to those who have read the first and still contemplating as to whether to pick up this sequel.

I don't know why people don't like this book, it's awesome!
By T. Harris
This is the second book in the Gaunts Ghost series, and while it's not the best Ghost's book, it's still a five star book. With a huge number of different characters in the books, I think this was a great idea for the series. Dan abnett was able to give more dimension to the characters and there past, which he brought to life in First and only.
Yes, this book is pretty much a collection of short stories and each story focus's on a different character. I personally don't like short stories, but the way Ghostmarker was written was awesome. The thing I don't like short stories is there short! they don't leave any time for character development and in less then an hour they are done. In ghostmaker, the short stories were there to show the character, and show their past, and why they are so attached to it.
Gaunt's Ghost is one of my favorite series of novels, and Ghostmaker is a must read for any fan of warhammer 40k or military sci-fi.

A Matter of Opinion, by Victor S. Navasky

Victor S. Navasky is the renowned editor, writer, and teacher who has been at the helm of The Nation for almost thirty years. A Matter of Opinion, a scintillating reflection on his journalistic experiences, is also an extraordinary political document-a spirited, provocative argument for independent journals of opinion as vital to the health of democracy.

Whether at the satirical magazine Monocle (which he founded when he was in law school), or at The New York Times, or finally at The Nation, Navasky's commitment to political engagement and to the social and intellectual values of independent cultural activity has always been front and center. In a wonderfully entertaining narrative, he tells of his innovative efforts to find money to keep The Nation afloat and to keep its pages lively, honest, and relevant, and he embellishes it with unforgettable stories-about his colleagues and opponents, from E. L. Doctorow to Bill Buckley; his heroes, from I. F. Stone to Jürgen Habermas; and his precedessors, from Daniel Defoe to Carey McWilliams.

Navasky's accomplishments have been legion, despite the threats of revenue-driven multinational media corporations, and despite the sometimes ugly, sometimes hilarious problems that fearless muckrakers face in any culture. A Matter of Opinion is a passionately written, irresistibly charming account of a great journalistic tradition.

From Publishers Weekly
As the mordant maxim byword at the offices of a certain left-wing weekly has it, "If it's bad for the country, it's good for The Nation" (the magazine's circulation has risen 71% since the 2000 election of George Bush). Of course, an alternative theory might emphasize Navasky's sure-handed stewardship of the country's "oldest weekly magazine" over the last 25 years. After editing a prominent 1960s satirical magazine (the Monocle) and working at the New York Times Magazine, Navasky, with his combination of bedrock principle and a light touch, was a perfect fit at the Nation. Unmistakably confined to professional doings (family members are hardly mentioned), this memoir recounts myriad tempests in teapots (and some not so trifling), lawsuits, donnybrooks, controversies and lines drawn in the sand. If the New Republic is where liberals address Washington, the Nation is where liberals talk among themselves. Navasky discusses many of his lively charges and colleagues (Trillin, Ephron, Hitchens, Sontag), and relates his thinking behind some of his most important decisions as an editor. Too fragmented to substitute for a history of the left over the past few decades, Navasky's story is finally about the nuts and bolts of editing an intellectual journal, interesting enough in its own right. From The New Yorker
"Journals of opinion are not by themselves going to save the world," Navasky admits, but, in nearly three decades of running The Nation and in four hundred-odd pages here, he remains a tireless evangelist for the idea that the world as we know it—liberal, democratic, and Enlightened—won't be saved without them and the public discourse they foster. Opinion magazines themselves, however, survive on the strength of their editors, or, as Navasky points out, on the reach of their editors' Rolodexes, and, luckily for The Nation, Navasky knows almost everyone. The front-room tour of his charmed rise from the Little Red School House to the publisher's chair includes visits with Bob Guccione, Paul Newman, and Jürgen Habermas. Along the way, Allen Ginsberg sleeps on the floor, formerly blacklisted members of the Hollywood Ten defame each other, and Norman Mailer claims he's never sold out.

From Booklist
Part memoir and part commentary on the state of opinion journals and American politics, Navasky, publisher of the Nation and a journalism professor, offers a scintillating look at his life and career. He recalls his escapades at Yale Law School, where he started the satirical magazine Monocle, beginning his long and sometimes hilarious efforts at providing lively commentary on national events and staying afloat financially. He recalls his association with rising young writers and commentators, including Calvin Trillin, Nora Ephron, and Ralph Nader, and his experiences as a freelancer, including work for the New York Times. All he learned about the magazine trade, harnessing literary talent, maintaining honest debate about social issues, and keeping the bills paid proved helpful when the chance came to own and operate the Nation, America's oldest weekly magazine. He offers fascinating stories of publishing giants and political personalities, including his magazine opponent William F. Buckley. As the trend toward profit-driven consolidation of the media threatens the free flow of opinions, Navasky's perspective is timely and witty. Vanessa Bush

excellent book
By E. M. Uprichard
A riveting tale of the world of opinion magazines. Not for everyone, perhaps, but if you have ever been interested in what it takes to publish a magazine, this book portrays it well. But the real selling point is that it's beautifully written. He's funny, clever, bright, and charming. You get a serious look at his life as well as his work and it's for this reason that the book is excellent.

Preserving a National Treasure
By MZ
This longish chronicle of Mr. Navasky's stewardship of the weekly periodical The Nation is entertaining and satisfying, if a bit too rich in detail. He is an adroit and witty observer and writer, and maintains just enough distance and objectivity as he tells the story of the long-beloved liberal journal of opinion (it was founded in 1865), and how its fate fell into his lap. The magazine couldn't have fallen into more capable hands. A rare commodity, the journal of opinion has a distinguished if rocky history in America, and Navasky capably describes how it survives in a climate permeated by capitalism and the profit motive.

He is anything but a cockeyed optimist; he's been to Harvard Business School, dined with movers and shakers and major philanthropists, and has a good practical head for business; but he has managed to remain a "purist" in the right sense: He stands square on the principle that the editor and the publisher (or benefactor) must not interfere with each other. He has made many famous and influential connections along the way, including with Paul Newman--whose meeting with him, engineered by E. L. Doctorow, makes up one of the more satisfying anecdotes in the book; but he is anything but a name-dropper.

The book tells the story of how Victor Navasky kept the beloved magazine afloat by the force of his wits, always keeping a bemused detachment and a sense of humor, and a seemingly endless series of plausible backup plans. As serious as his subject is--the ability to keep serious and truthful debate available before the thinking public even in the face of well-funded opposition--often strong political opposition--Navasky keeps the tone light and cheery. It's not that he enjoys a good fight; more, that he is a capable navigator, disarming his foes with his intelligence and logic (and undoubtedly, his charm), possessing a good practical sense of what's possible, making his case and usually winning it; and finding ever more resourceful ways to keep the treasured weekly journal alive and even thriving.

Invisible Friends, by Alan Ayckbourn

Alan Ayckbourn's play is about a very ordinary teenager called Lucy. With her father glued to the cowboys on the telly, her mother preoccupied with neighbourly gossip and her brother enclosed in his ear-phones, no one wants to know about her place in the school swimming team. So Lucy revives her childhood fantasy friend, Zara, setting a place for her at the very ordinary tea table. This time Zara materializes, bringing with her an idealized father and brother, and showing Lucy how to make her real family vanish. The moral of this cautionary tale is carefully spelt out - that when you get what you want it's not what you wanted - as Lucy's dream family turns out to be a nightmare. The play is supposedly for children of seven upwards, but there's a message here for parents, too, about listening to kids.

Aquinas's Theory of Natural Law: An Analytic Reconstruction, by Anthony J. Lisska

This new critique of Aquinas's theory of natural law presents an incisive, new analysis of the central themes and relevant texts in the Summa Theologiae which became the classical canon for natural law. Professor Lisska discusses Aquinas's view of ethical naturalism within the context of the contemporary revival and recovery of Aristotelian ethics, arguing that Aquinas is fundamentally Aristotelian in the foundations of his moral theory. The book looks at the historical development of natural law themes in the twentieth century, and in particular demonstrates the important connections between Aquinas and contemporary legal philosophers. The book should be of considerable interest to scholars of jurisprudence as well as philosophers.

Review

"Philosophical controversies over natural law have immediate relevance to conflicts of everyday life ... not the least valuable feature of Anthony J. Lisska's lively and illuminating discussion is his catalogue of positions taken by participants in those controversies ... there are a number of stimulating discussions that deserve independent treatment, notably that of human rights. Lisska's elegant prose-style and clarity of exposition combine to make his book a pleasure to read. It deserves a wider audience than do most academic books."--Alasdair MacIntyre, Duke University, International Philosophical Quarterly Vol. XXXVII, No. 1 Issue No. 145 (March 1997)

beg to disagree
By Lance B. Richey
I really feel obliged to disagree with the panning review given above. I am a professional philosopher myself, and while I ultimately would reject natural law theory as a basis for ethics, for many of the problems with it which Lisska identifies and vainly struggles to overcome in his book, I was very impressed by the book itself. I think Lisska situates contemporary natural theory within the various debates over law and ethics over the last century, identifies the key "metaphysical" problem with the theory, namely, its reliance upon the concept of all humans sharing a common nature or essence, and puts forward a reasonable and hardly extravagent functional alternative to Aristotelian essences as a possible basis for furhter natural law theorizing.
No, I was not ulimtatley convinced by the book, but I was very impressed with its clarity and it sophistication. Unlike the other review, this is one of the few books on Aquinas which I would not part with. Someone with an interest in what makes Aquinas a perenially interesting philosopher should buy the other reviewer's copy--I already own one or I would!

He spends at least the better part of two chapters on it
By Thomas
I'm a legal scholar preparing to write a book on contract theory from a realist perspective, inspired by Gordley's work on the "philosophical origins of modern contract doctrine." I had not been able to find anything that introduced in a sophisticated way the metaethics of Aquinas and Aristotle on natural law. I finally found this book, exactly what I was looking for. Lisska is almost too careful and it makes the book somewhat plodding, but he makes up for it with the clarity of his style. I hardly know what to say to the critic below who claims Lisska simply falls prey to the naturalistic fallacy. He spends at least the better part of two chapters on it. I wished he had spent less time on it and more time on Kripke and Nelson and their respective metaphysics. I'm giving this book 5 stars instead of 4 because it is the only book I could find on its essential (a little pun there) topic after much searching.

Unacceptable on Every Level
By D. S. Heersink
The first, fifty-five pages are given over to ubiquitous promises the author intends to make good in the last two-hundred-and-fifty pages, and doesn't. These promises allude to precursors of natural law in its many variegated forms, some of which are not really "natural law" principles at all. Most of the discussion is about how some contemporary Thomists and neo-Thomists have approached the issue, but the reader cannot follow the subtle nuances of this discussion without knowing the meaning of natural law at the outset. The exposition of a reconsidered natural law follows this meandering, often uninteresting, introduction. In another confusion, the author discusses the impact of Moore's naturalistic fallacy on natural law before he describes what Aquinas' "natural law" is. So, over a hundred pages are heuristically inverted, leaving the reader to ponder future promises and anticipate an argument before he knows even the meanings of the terms of the argument drawn. If I did not already possess knowledge of Aquinas' natural law theory, these pages would have been meaningless; as it is, I found the points they may have been trying to make arcane, discursive, and near solipsistic.
Lisska insists upon ten fundamental principles necessary to serve the function of adopting Aquinas' natural law theory. Four of these principles require we accept "essences," a medieval concept wholly foreign in modern philosophy. A fifth principle requires "truth" as a correspondence theory between mind and things (see, Searle, "Construction of Social Reality" for why this is no longer so). The other principles insist that (6) metaphysics of morals is possible, (7) that reason takes precedence over the affective will, &c. In other words, one has to adopt the medieval, which is to say the Aristotlean, metaphysical schema in order for a "modern reconstruction" of Aquinas' natural law to succeed. Lisska writes, "In Aquinas's ontology, the dispositional paradigm holds only for temporal essences" (87), and again, "Divine commands must be in accord with the rational demands of the eternal law" (ibid), but it is precisely those very preconditions that makes Aquinas' natural law inimical to contemporary philosophy in the first place. I don't "see" what Lisska means by an "analytical reconstruction." His writing is the most circumlocutious writing on Thomistic natural law as one can find; it would be better to assimilate it from the source: "Summa Theologica," I-II, q. 90-97, esp. q. 94.
Finally, by page 107, we attain Lisska's definition of the natural law: "Because the end itself determines the well-functioning of the human person. The disposition has, as a part of its very nature, a tendency towards a specific end. This end, when realized, contributes to the well-being of the individual. This is the crux of natural law theory. Nature has `determined', as it were, the ends which lead to the well-being of the individuals of the natural kind." From this nexus, the rest is downhill, as Lisska then evaluates how different scholastic and neo-scholastic philosophers of this past century have adapted this explication into their working-definitions. It's a tremendous bore, not at all enlightening, and of relative useless speculation on its applicability today. If it weren't for Robert George's excellent work in the field, I would have tossed natural law theory out the window. The book is that bad.
I routinely buy from Oxford University Press based on their unparalleled quality of authors and editors. How this travesty passed its high editorial standards is deeply puzzling. I have highlighted only some of my disappointments with this book, but overall it is one of the worst books I've read in the field of theology, philosophy, or anthropology. My copy is for sale.

Methods for the Economic Evaluation of Health Care Programmes (Oxford Medical Publications), by Michael F. Drummond, Mark J. Sculpher, Kar

The purpose of economic evaluation is to inform decisions intended to improve healthcare. The new edition of Methods for the Economic Evaluation of Health Care Programmes equips the reader with the essential hands-on experience required to undertake evaluations by providing a 'tool kit' based on the authors' own experiences of undertaking economic evaluations.

Building on the strength of the previous edition, the accessible writing style ensures the text is key reading for the non-expert reader, as no prior knowledge of economics is required. The book employs a critical appraisal framework, which is useful both to researchers conducting studies and to decision-makers assessing them. Practical examples are provided throughout to aid learning and understanding.

The book analyses the methodological and policy challenges that face health systems in seeking to allocate resources efficiently and fairly. New chapters include 'Principles of economic evaluation' and 'Making decisions in healthcare' which introduces the reader to core issues and questions about allocation, and provides an understanding of the fundamental principles which guide decision making.

A key part of evidence-based decision making is the analysis of all the relevant evidence to make informed decisions and policy. The new chapter 'Identifying, synthesising and analysing evidence' highlights the importance of systematic review, and how and why these methods are used. As methods of analysis continue to change the chapter on 'Characterising, reporting and interpreting uncertainty' introduces the reader to recent methods of analysis and why uncertainty matters for health care decision.

The fourth edition of Methods for the Economic Evaluation of Health Care Programmes has been thoroughly revised and updated, making it essential reading for anyone commissioning, undertaking, or using economic evaluations in health care, including health service professionals, health economists, and health care decision makers.

The book covers almost all the aspect of CEA with great details and provides really good perspectives to the field. However, the content in this newer edition is organized very differently from that in previous editions (not in a good way to me). Also, the language in the book is unnecessarily difficult for understanding at the first sight (convoluted long sentences make simple concepts hard to be grasped). As the authors' perspective is from UK or European health system, you will need some extra time to translate into US system.

Care of Mind/Care of Spirit: A Psychiatrist Explores Spiritual Direction, by Gerald G. May

Although secular psychology addressed a great deal about how we come to be the way we are and how we might live more efficiently, it can offer nothing in terms of why we exist or how we should use our lives," writes Gerald May in this classic discussion of the nature of contemporary spiritual guidance and its relationship to counseling and psychiatry. For millions turning for answers to the world of the spirit, May shows how psychiatry and spiritual direction are alike, how they complement one another, and how they ultimately diverge.
