Wonder what the world you will be after you pass on? Read it!

Being a Chinese, I grown up listening to myths and stories about ghosts and spirits. How one will ascend to Heaven if one will perform good deeds and be charitable. For those who chose to the other Way, he/she will perish in 18 storeys of the Hell where the Lord of Hades will torture the evil souls. The tales told by my late grandparents and parents had be part of my growing up. Also (because of these tales), "The Seventh Day" caught my attention and best of all, written by Yu Hua.

This book is not about "grandfather's" stories about the dead. It is from the imagination of Yu Hua how a person will "experience" when passed away in the first seventh day. I must applaud that Yu Hua pieces the related incidents of the main character very well. His simple writing style makes the novel an easy read and understand the world we live in is filled with love and trust.

I will never think how a person's "first seventh day" (頭七) has such association with his (living) life and surroundings. The story content and length is apt to narrate the whole experience of being "dead" and what one can learn from in living years as well as the early days of demise.

If you understand Chinese (language), I will recommend you to read this to appreciate the story and underlying learning points.

Magical realism?

The Seventh day is a story of a soul lost in the land of ghosts who cannot find rest after their death. The story is divided into 7 days following the death of the story's main character. Yang Fei's life unfolds before our eyes as he wanders through the limbo and the real world. His other character's stories weave into a magical fabric, akin to that of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, albeit the setting is modern and urban. The stories depict a mix of materialism and traditional values and is a mordant metaphor on what China is today.

Rich language and lyricism make is what makes this book so appealing. This is definitely a world class literature. I hope that the translation which is supposed to be published in Jan. 2015 is as rich and appealing as the Chinese version.

What began as Portugal’s mission to discover an unknown world soon became a quest to find Prester John, the legendary Christian priest/king presumed to be living on the far side of Islam. In an attempt to form a Christian military alliance, the search was both concluded and, in a manner, initiated by explorer Pêro da Covilhã in 1493 with his overland journey to the Highland court of Emperor Eskendar. This was instrumental in setting up a string of ties between the two nations – diplomatic, military, religious, cultural and (most long-lasting of all) architectural – almost three decades before Portugal’s diplomatic mission of 1520.
The fascinating story contained in the stones can yet be seen in the Portuguese and “Gondarine” ruins that dot the Gojjam and Lake Tana regions; they continue to influence today’s Highland architectural design. Hespeler-Boultbee examines over thirty different sites, many of which are remote and rarely visited. Fully illustrated with colour photos and drawings.

About the Author:
J.J. Hespeler-Boultbee is an Art & Architectural Historian and Associate of the Institute of Ethiopian Studies, Addis Ababa University. He lived for twenty-five years in Portugal, during that time making several forays into the Ethiopian Highlands on behalf of the Department of History and CIDEHUS (Centro de Investigação e Desenvolvimento em Ciências Humanas e Sociais), the research and development institute at the University of Évora. For the two year period, 2007-2009, he lived in and conducted research from Bahir Dar on Lake Tana, Ethiopia, during which time he found his historical conclusions were at considerable variance with colleagues in the History Department at Bahir Dar University – disagreements which have prompted the revisions leading to this current updated and revised edition of A Story in Stones.

Important Historical/Artistic Overview

While there are an increasing number of volumes, works, and articles in the press regarding Eastern/Western exchange for Asia and the Americas as well, there is precious little on this topic - other than works dealing with the slave trade. Portugal's influence - and here we are talking about Catholic and Jesuit influence as well - is an important but little know chapter in Africa's religious and artistic history.

Because there is so little on this topic I am quite pleased with the work. However, a hard back edition would be better, in my opinion, as well as a great use of color photos instead of B/W imagery. Also a few articles dealing in greater depth with the artistic nuances and historical details would be useful. There is a lot of explanation of the various sites but the work needs something more to pull it more effectively together - in my opinion. Still a very good and useable work.

A Treat to Read

A Story in Stones was a treat for me to read, having lived in the midst of some of the sites and visiting many others by horse in the 60's while in the Peace Corps. The book is well written, engaging and thorough. J.J. Hespeler-Boultbee has the rare combination of being a good writer and historian along with a lot of experience in Portuguese stone masonry. He included considerable history to put everything in perspective. Highly recommended.

Wow. I found this book yesterday afternoon and just finished it this afternoon. I had been looking for more information about The Heroine's Journey, as I have always been intrigued by The Hero's Journey, yet, as a woman, it has never quite resonated with me. I have experienced much of the journey, as described by the author - but I had not put the pieces together until seeing much of my journey described on the page in other women's journeys. Every woman owes it to herself to read this book.

Love the book and love Michael Fassbender's acting ability

I have greatly admired Michael's diverse acting ability in each of the movies I have seen. I also love Ireland and I am German, so this was a perfect book for me (since Michael is German-born and Irish-raised). Well written, easy read and very enjoyable if you like movies and the stories behind them.

While facilitating a two-week long training class, I used this book to break up learning modules and serve as a source of brain teasers to stimulate creative thinking.Some of the scenarios and solutions were clever, but most seemed to range from bizarre to preposterous. Maybe I'm just not "getting" the whole lateral thinking concept.
